|
| How long have you been improvising, and where? |
I began improvising in 1986 at Drew University in New Jersey. It was
on-again off-again for the next eight years, including some commedia
dell'arte at Loyola University Chicago, but I have been practicing and
performing regularly in Spokane since 1994. Before joining BDT, I was a
member of Gonzaga University Theatre Sports (for which I am currently
the faculty advisor), Hijinks, Slow Children at Play, and most recently,
ComedySportz. |
| What is your educational background? |
I have a bachelors degree in theater and computer science with a minor
in philosophy from Drew University in New Jersey. I have a Masters
degree in philosophy from Loyola University Chicago. I have a Master of
Divinity from Gonzaga University. Currently I am working on my Ph.D. in
leadership studies at Gonzaga University. |
| What is your theatrical background? |
I started doing plays in fourth grade --- I think the first was A
Christmas Carol. I participated regularly both on- and backstage in high
school and college. While in graduate school I performed in a number of
student directed scenes and plays. |
| What is your career goal, or if you are where you want to be, what are you doing now? |
My job title is Computer Labs Manager for the College of Arts and Sciences of Gonzaga University. My primary aspiration is to help raise my two excellent little human beings to be two excellent grown-up human beings. |
| Why do you improvise? |
I enjoy the thrill of performing --- there are few experiences to match
a performance well executed and well received. I appreciate the
challenge and wonder of "something wonderful right away." From a
practical standpoint, the practice and performance schedule for
improvised theater is more family and school friendly than that of
scripted theater (note: my voice recognition software originally phrased
it as "then the death of scripted theater"). |
| Where are you from? |
I grew up mostly in Maryland outside of Washington, DC. In 1981 my family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where I attended high school and
where my parents still live --- so it feels like home. The past third of
my life (and the anticipated rest of my life) has been spent in Spokane. |
| What are your hobbies, what do you spend your time doing outside of work and the Blue Door? |
I parent with all that entails. I try to find ways to spend time with my
wife. I play classical guitar well enough for someone who rarely
practices. I read about digital photography and woodworking in
anticipation of the day I have time and money to do both. I enjoy
reading in multiple genres including history, military history, science,
science fiction, fantasy, and general knowledge. |
